12 Exposures, 12 Months

I may have too many cameras.

Well, not really. I am not a collector or anything, I was unexpectedly given three film cameras by a friend who no longer had any use for them. Two Rolleiflex TLRs and a Nikon SLR with lenses. I’m not complaining, I enjoy shooting with all of them. Each one brings a special experience to photography.  When I add in the other cameras, the film and digital Leica’s, the Kodak Medalist II, the rotation time for each camera is pretty long and sometimes they get forgotten completely.

This happened with my 1941 Rolleiflex Automat. Last year at this time I loaded a roll of expired Tri-X and took two exposures before setting the camera down. I dug it out of my bag last week and finished the roll, developing it in Rodinal and then scanning the film on my Plustek scanner.

I really like the results. Gritty and grainy. The uncoated Tessar lens is sharp, but prone to flare when pointed into the light. The combined character of the Automat and the expired film is unique and beautiful to me. Out of the roll of 12 exposures I will end up printing 2 or 3. Not a bad ratio, for me anyway.
