I had convinced myself that it somehow wasn’t worth it. Too finicky with the constant temperature control and the precise timing.
I was wrong.
Developing the black and white film that I shoot has been a part of my life for many years. I’ve done it so many times that I think nothing of it. I vary the time depending on the temperature of the water and chemicals, using different developers and methods to achieve subtle differences in my negatives. I am constantly learning and changing the processes involved in developing black and white film. And, I think nothing of it.
C-41 is easier. I’ve been told, over and over. Finally I listened. There are many advantages to ‘doing it yourself’, the biggest for me is cleanliness. I no longer have to spend so much time spotting my negatives after scanning because I am just cleaner than the lab that I used to use.
Here are a few photos that I made on the pier in King Harbor and then developed at home.
