There is nothing better, to me, than traveling. Meeting new people and collecting experiences. Bringing the memories home in the form of photographs makes it all the more special. Over the years I have compiled the images that I have made into printed books that can be easily enjoyed over and over. A real, tangible, memento of the life that my wife and I are so fortunate to have.
I realized this morning that I have never even considered putting together the same sort of book with images of home. We live in Hermosa Beach, California, probably only a 10 minute walk to the sand and the glorious Pacific Ocean and for some reason I have never considered the thousands of images that I have made around home to be worthy of a memento book. I guess that living over thirty years in a place, even a place that happens to be a vacation destination for people from all over the world, breeds a certain ho hum familiarity that led me to take it all for granted. What a knucklehead!
Not that I really need another project, but I now have one. Starting from the new year and going forward, I will be compiling the everyday images from around my home into a book or zine tentatively titled “My Pictures of Home”. I’ll be sharing my progress along the way.
Here are a few images from my most recent roll of Kodak Portra 400. I made these with my Leica M2 and Canon 50mm f/1.4 ltm lens and then developed at home in an Arista c-41 kit.
