Goin’ Back to Georgia

Fall is the best time to be in South Georgia. The air is crisp and clear. There is no sign of either the unofficial state bird, the mosquito, or the mind-numbing, stifling humidity. Becki and I made the trip for a visit with her folks. I hadn’t seen them in well over a year, so we were both really looking forward to being there.

Traveling in Georgia is so foreign to me. The entire state population is smaller than the greater Los Angeles area and the largest city, Atlanta, seems small and quaint. Visiting Kingsland in South Georgia is truly otherworldly. Mellencamp, Springsteen and pretty much every country and western musician have made careers extolling the virtues of small-town America. It is the place where real people come from, where family and brotherhood take center stage and is, apparently, the best place to meet a true American beauty for a mate.

Yeah. I don’t get it.  I’ll take almost any large city over rural America any day. More art, culture, food, and diversity. Less religion, xenophobia, and intolerance. These are my preferences and my personal experiences. After saying all of that, we will continue to visit our family and friends in the south, mostly because they will never venture west to Los Angeles where all the crazy people are.

There is something that I love about the south-east coast and that is the terrain. The rivers, swamps, and marshland are uniquely beautiful and absolutely worth the visit. I am thinking that I will make a strict photography trip, shooting large format and 6×17 exclusively. Maybe next winter or early spring.

These are a few images from St. Marys, GA. We had stopped for a dinner of fried shrimp, hushpuppies, and coleslaw and this was the view outside the restaurant.

I guess I love the shrimp in Georgia, too. So, that’s good.
