Every photographer who sticks with it long enough has given most photographic styles or fads a try. Lately, there have been a lot of nice close-up photos posted on Twitter and I was inspired. I wanted to finish the roll of Ektar in my Pentax 67 so I mounted my 105mm lens on extension tubes and took my first close-up photos in many years. I learned long ago not to sell gear unless it’s absolutely necessary financially. Eventually, I circle back and dig that lens or flash or, in this case, extension tube, out of a drawer and put it to use again.
The artistic value of these photos is nothing to get too excited about, but I had fun. I also started thinking about subjects and how to better my technique for next time. Plus, those Ektar colors are wonderful.
Now the extension tubes live in the backpack that holds my Pentax gear. Next time I’m out with it I’ll be taking a much closer look at what I’m photographing.
