Platinum Palladium Printing – 12/26/2020

This weekend I made some prints. I needed to keep my hands and head busy and it didn’t matter to me if the images were new or not. I just wanted to make something.

The first image is an iPhone photo from 2011. My wife and I lived in Austin, TX and we were having brunch at a favorite restaurant, South Congress Cafe. This is a still life of our booth by the window. As usual, the images here just don’t compare to holding the 11×14 inch print in your hands. It is beautiful.

This image was taken from the kitchen window of a friend’s farmhouse in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. For several years we have spent the New Year holiday with them, that is, until this year. This picture is from December of 2019.

The next three are 35mm B&W slides taken on the Seattle/Bainbridge Ferry. They are from 2017 but capture the feeling of 2020 during Covid transit restrictions.

I will be adding a cyanotype layer to all three of these prints sometime next week.

I’m pretty satisfied with the way all of these prints turned out. Through trial, error, and just plain dumb luck I’ve somehow managed to get consistent quality prints that look how I envisioned them to look.

Now I’m going to change everything. With loads of time on my hands at the moment, I am going to re-work my process using Quadtone RIP and Quick Curve DN. I’m hoping this will get me better quality digital negatives leading to more nuanced and detailed prints.
